Mayor Beng Climaco on Saturday morning convened the security sector to discuss urgent measures implemented in the city following the Davao City blast and the ongoing military operation in Sulu.

This, even as she reiterated her call for Zamboanguenos to remain calm but vigilant and to fully support and cooperate with the authorities to thwart lawlessness.

Climaco said the local government in coordination with the police and military is doing everything possible to ensure safety and security in the city. Since Friday night and even prior to that, she said police authorities have been ordered to further tighten security precaution and military security adjustments were carried out in the city.

Measures include strengthening of police and military visibility and patrols in all areas of convergence and vital installations including the 98 barangays specifically coastal areas utilizing both land, sea and air assets.

Ambulances are on standby in churches, mosques, public markets, IBT and even in so-called “gimmick” areas and other vital installations considered vulnerable to attacks. City Administrator Apple Go and Police Station 11 operatives are tasked to around town to dialogue with business establishments related to security. The mayor together with officials from Task Force Zamboanga Chief, Zamboanga City Police office and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office will spearhead the night patrol activities.

“We continue to appeal to our residents to remain calm but vigilant and to report to authorities the presence of suspicious individuals and abandoned baggage or items and vehicles in your area,” she said.

Officials in the 98 barangays including barangay tanods and volunteers are urged to do their share in providing security to the people through close coordination with the police chiefs in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Text messages and facebook posts about security threats should be validated with proper authorities before they are circulated and spread, according to the mayor.

The coastal areas are under the supervision of Coast Guard and Navy forces together with the barangays.

“Assets involve not only personnel but also equipment and even armored personnel carriers,” Mayor Climaco said adding that the best defense and response is to proactively think how to act in any situation to avoid any atrocity and emergency. —  Sheila Covarrubias
