Seven (7) houses were destroyed by huge waves Sunday night which residents described as an abnormal occurrence. No one was hurt during the incident.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said rescue teams were dispatched to the area around 8pm Sunday immediately after the distress call was received from Manicahan barangay chairman Crisencio Natividad.

Apolinario said all coastal barangays were alerted to prepare for a similar incident.

The huge waves came around 24 hours after a 6.7 tremor hit Surigao Saturday night, according to Apolinario. “We do not know if it is the effect of the earthquake in Surigao the night before”.

The waves, per description of the residents were irregularly huge and washed away the houses made of light materials.

As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco has instructed Apolinario to closely coordinate with the Phivolcs-Zamboanga office for the conduct of a scientific study to determine the cause of the incident as well as to check on reports of some abnormal movements at sea in the nearby island barangays.

Nonetheless, the mayor said coastal barangays should be alerted and ready for any eventuality. (Sheila Covarrubias)
