The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to inaugurate two innovation centers starting February 16 to improve the region’s capability in science and technology related endeavours.

DOST will inaugurate the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) while an Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering will be launched at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU.)

The inauguration and launch will be spearheaded by DOST Secretary Fortunato T. dela Peña.

A total of P3.3-M was earmarked for the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center.

The center will provide technology for new equipment to create and improve new and existing products.

Equipments at the center include a water retort, spray dryer, vacuum dryer, freezer dryer, and a vacuum packaging machine.

Meanwhile, the Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering was provided with funds amounting to P5.1-million.

DOST funded the equipment and training of personnel to man the centre.

The schools meanwhile will shoulder light, water, operation and maintenance expenses.

Ricardo Apolinario, DOST Information Officer said that the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center will be fully operational by March while the Innovation Center for Metals and Engineering will be operational by the third quarter of the year.  (RGAAGo)
