The Zamboanga Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) has failed to file charges against suspected power thieves in barangays Mampang and Talon Talon due to a lack of witnesses to testify against suspects in the irregularity.

Zamcelco Spokesperson Ferdie Rodriguez admitted the failure of the electric cooperative to file the cases against the suspects due to a lack of witnesses who will execute affidavits as basis for filing charges.

Suspects are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 7832, the Anti-Electric Pilferage Law.

Rodriguez however said that consumers in whose houses where illegal connections were discovered during the surprise operation of Zamcelco last week face penalties under the law.

Rodriguez said that aside from the penalty, consumers were warned against repeating the misdeed or face possible charges in connection with power pilferage.

Last week, a surprise inspection by the Zamboanga Electric Cooperative in areas of Mampang and Talon Talon revealed a network of illegal connections underground.

Zamcelco however has yet to establish the suspects responsible for the illegal network due to a reported lack of cooperation from residents.  (Liza Jocson)
