One student was killed while three others were injured during an explosion caused by an unexploded ordnance inside the school campus of a national high school in Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur yesterday.

Police Regional Office-9 Information Officer Supt Rogelio Alabata said that the explosion occurred after two students dropped an M203 grenade launcher that they were playing with inside the Comprehensive National High School campus yesterday morning.

The fatality was identified as Rodolfo Halius, 17 years old and a resident of barangay Poblacion, Lakewood.

The wounded were identified as Jhony Daluyon, 13; Alona Fe Clarabal, 14; and Chirsha Mae Repute, 13.

All victims are students of the Comprehensive National High School in Poblacion, Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur.

According to the report,  Daluyon brought the explosive to school after finding it in the vicinit of Mount Serungan, barangay Poblacion, Lakewood last Tuesday.

At around 6:45am yesterday, Daluyon played with the explosive together with Halius.  The ordnance exploded after it was dropped by the students.

Two female students who were standing near the explosion site were injured.

The four victims were initially brought to the Rural Health Center and later transferred to the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Medical Center in barangay Dao, Pagadian.

Marivic Jongco, Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Information Officer, however said that Halius, who was reported in serious condition, was declared dead a few hours after undergoing medical treatment.

One of the female victims is still in critical condition as of press time. (Dan Toribio)
