ZSCMST-DOST inaugurates Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center PDF Print E-mail

The Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology with the Department of Science and Technology  inaugurated  the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center (ZPFIC), the only in region 9.  The inauguration happened last February 16, 2017 at the ZPFIC of the ZSCMST Main Campus.  The said inauguration was attended and supported by the Department of Science and Technology Secretary, Hon. Fortunato dela Pena, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Hon. Brenda Nazareth-Manzano, Zamboanga City 1st District Representative- Hon. Celso L. Lobregat and other dignitaries coming from the academe, private and business sectors,

With the support of the College President Dr. Milavel Depacaquivo-Nazario  and effort by the then Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology Brenda Nazareth-Manzano who is now the Undersecretary for  DOST Regional Operations, the Zamboanga Peninsula Food Innovation Center was materialized- a center equipped with DOST-designed equipment and  other food processing facilities where new food products can be processed and developed.  ZPFIC enables product innovation and diversification to maximize value addition to diverse agricultural and fishery resources, upgrade manufacturing operations and processing systems,  standardize local processing technologies, design packaging for regional products, strengthen research, development and extension services, and commercialize technologies. With the High Impact Technology Solutions (HITS) equipment available  the importance of  exploring the essentials and emerging needs of the Philippine business and other sectors in order that the goods and food products can be processed and developed. The ZPFIC is manned by the indefatigable workforce managed by Prof. Divinia U. Ramillano who devoted their time and effort for the center.  At its early operational phase ZPFIC was awarded by  DOST PCIEERD National Pre-screening for the Search/ Recognition of the Most Innovative Products 2016 – Sea Grapes “Lato” Powder ( Spray Dryer ) and Pickled Sardine Roll (Water Retort) and Most Innovative Product ( Spray Dryer Category) and Industry Choice Award. Among the eight other host institutions of regional  food innovation centers in the entire Philippines like  UP Diliman-CHE (NCR), Cagayan State University in Region 2, Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology in Region IV-B, Guimaras State College in Region 6, Cebu Institute  of Technology in Region 7, Eastern Visayas State University in Region 8,  Philippine Women’s College in Region 11, and Mindanao University of science and Technology in Region 13.

Dr. Nazario, the College President said during her speech in the inauguration that she is thankful to the Department of Science and Technology for the trust afforded to ZSCMST and  that ZPFIC welcomes other partners who are willing to share their skills and proficiency in food innovation.
