The Bureau of Customs is encouraging local traders to revive the barter trade, a system seen to dissuade traders from engaging in smuggling of goods.

Bureau of Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon explained that barter trade is considered legal importation due to the accreditation of organizations by the Bureau of Customs.

Faeldon also said that the system is considered an advantage on the part of the traders who can pool their resources and engage in importation of goods legally.

“Kung mag-isa malaki ang cost, magsama sama sila they can pool in capital, put up a barter centre,” Faeldon pointed out.

The establishment of the barter trade is one of the directives of President Rodrigo Duterte to Faeldon.

The issue was tackled during the recently-held Seminar Workshop for traders on Importation Procedures held at a local hotel in Zamboanga last Friday.  (Liza Jocson)
