To ensure the fast tracked implementation of various major infrastructure projects with the support of the national government, Mayor Celso Lobregat recently met with Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson to follow up developments related to the projects.

The projects that Lobregat hopes to implement with support from the national government are the Limaong bridge, expansion of the R.T. Lim boulevard development project,  expansion of the Baliwasan Seaside road and the by-pass road that will connect the east coast to the west coast.

Mayor Lobregat said the meeting, held in Manila Monday, August 1, was purposely to ensure that the projects are included in the budget and are on track with the city government’s schedule.

In the proposed Limaong bridge project, the mayor is requesting the DPWH to prepare the project design while the city government will fund the construction of the same.

Due to the stable financial condition, the local government, according to Lobregat can fund the project considering that it is very essential to the people of Limaong and the neighboring areas.

Last May, it is recalled, the DPWH secretary in a meeting with Mayor Lobregat and some DPWH-9 officials has revealed the inclusion of P150 million funding for the Baliwasan seaside expansion and the allocation of P40 million in the budget for the expansion of the R.T. Lim Boulevard site development project that will cover the remaining 400 linear meters baywalk leading to the area fronting the City Council building.

The by-pass road project to connect the east coast to the west coast on the other hand is being lobbied by the mayor and the two congressional representatives in a bid to have it undertaken the soonest possible time.

The project will be purely funded by the national government through the DPWH.
Mayor Lobregat hopes that the said projects can be accomplished within this year or next year as all are expected to help bring about development and projects in the concerned areas and Zamboanga in general.

The mayor said he will continue to follow up the projects with the DPWH Secretary to ensure that the processing of the documents for the realization of the same will be expedited.

Congress is currently deliberating on the proposed 2012 General Appropriations act amounting to over P1.8 T in which the DPWH gets a sizeable share of the funds for infrastructure projects all over the country. —Sheila Covarrubias
