A notorious leader of an Abu Sayyaf Kidnap for Ransom group was killed while two other persons were arrested in an encounter with government forces in Zamboanga Sibugay yesterday morning.

Police Regional Office-9 Information Officer Supt Rogelio Alabata identified the fatality as Yasin Karim with aliases of Imam Yasin, Commander Manbing, and Commander Maas.

Karim is the leader of the Imam Yasin Kidnap for Ransom Group.

A police trooper, identified as PO2 Larry Falitnang, was wounded in the brief firefight and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Two other gang members identified as Aujaie Moh Abdul Karim and Murad Mohamad were  arrested.

Reports said that the encounter happened during a joint law enforcement operation by combined police elements at the vicinity of South Tarlah, Barangay Tampalan, Alicia Municipality, Zamboanga Sibugay wherein Karim was killed amid a heavy exchange of gunfire.

Police also recovered an M-14 rifle, cellphones and subversive documents in the area.

The group is actively involved in kidnapping and extortion activities in the province. (Dan Toribio)
