The Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (ZCDRRMO) is planning to propose a forced relocation ordinance to clear decongested and calamity-prone areas near riverbanks and shorelines.

Dr. Elmier Apolinario, ZCDDRMO Chief, said that that their office plans to operate first on residences beside riverbanks.

Aside from protecting people in these areas, the ordinance also aims to clear the riverbanks and shorelines of garbage.

River banks erosion is said to be caused by human impact and negligence.

“Relocation should come in with appropriate livelihood.  We would not want to displace communities without appropriate livelihood.  If they already have the components then we are going to offer the relocation in these communities,” said Apolinario.

Apolinario said that he is preparing his team to coordinate with barangay officials to address the issue properly.  (Alinazar Hail- Lahid/ E-media)
