Four Abu Sayyaf members were killed during a heavy firefight between government troops and the bandits at Barangay Lumipad, Talipao, Maimbung Sulu Sunday morning.

According to a statement issued by the Western Mindanao Command, the fighting erupted at around 4:30am yesterday when troops of the 64th Marine Company of the Marine Special Operations Group encountered an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf members in the locality.

The marines were deployed by Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Col Cirilito Sobejana  the night before after receiving reports on the presence of bandits in the area.

At least four bodies of Abu Sayyaf members were recovered after heavy fighting in the area.

A total of seven high-powered firearms were also recovered by the military.

As of press time, the Marines are still conducting hot pursuit operations against the fleeing bandits.

Western Mindanao Commander Maj Gen Carlito Galvez assured the public that the military is focused on going after the Abu Sayyaf.

“Our troops are more than motivated to go after these bandits who know nothing but to victimize innocent civilians for their own personal gain,” Galvez said. (Liza Jocson)
