Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday lauded Zamboangueño Eumir Felix Marcial for his remarkable feat in the recently concluded AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Marcial, together with his father and trainer Elalio and mother Carmellita paid a courtesy call on Mayor Lobregat at City Hall yesterday afternoon to personally inform the chief executive of his recognition.

The mayor said Marcial’s feat brought honor and fame to Zamboanga and serves as an inspiration for all boxing aficionados and the Zamboanguenos in general.
Marcial, 15, from Lunzuran, is a product of the city government’s Summer Learn to Play program, a month-long free sports clinic sponsored by the city government every May.

The young Marcial recalled that he was 10 years old then when he joined the summer sports program organized by the City Government annually to help the youth reach their dreams thru sports.

Marcial is the first Filipino to win a gold medal in the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan last month, since the country started sending delegations to the international competition in 2001. His victory over Cengiz Onat of Turkey sealed the historical feat when he overpowered the Turkish in a 9-7 victory.
Before the final clash for the gold against Onat, Marcial was sensational in stopping Vaha Eduard of Belarus in the semifinal round via first round stoppage.

Prior to the international scene, according to Bernardino Patiño-the City’s Sports Division chief, Marcial won a series of boxing tourney in the country organized by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines and PLDT-Smart.

Last December 6-16, he won in the Mindanao Area Selection held in Panabo City, Davao del Norte. It was followed by another victory during the National Selection conducted in Cagayan de Oro City from January 26-31, 2011.

According to the City’s Sports Division, around February or March, ABAP sent a letter to the Marcial family asking the young boxer to be part of the National Team. The request would also mean that he should transfer from Maria Clara Lorezo Lobregat Memorial High School to a secondary school in Baguio City to usher his training for the Kazakhstan encounter.

When Marcial arrived in the country after the historic win, PLDT-Smart chairman and ABAP chair Manny Pangilinan awarded him P300,000 as a reward for his exploit.
When asked about his future goals, Marcial said that he is aiming a gold medal in 2013 London Olympics.

Marcial is also a product of the Golpe-golpe na barangay, a boxing program of District 2 Congressman Erbie Fabian. — Richard Aliangan/City HallPIO
