The Department of the Interior and Local Government-9 (DILG-9) is warning the 1,904 barangays in the region of sanctions should they fail to conduct a Barangay Assembly on March 25.

Section 397 of the Local Government Code (LGC) requires the conduct of a Barangay Assembly Day on March 25 for the first semester of 2017, to give residents the opportunity to discuss with barangay officials the concerns of their community.

The theme for the coming Barangay Assembly Day is, “Sulong Barangay Kontra Droga, Krimen at Katiwalian: Makialam! Makilahok! Makiisa!”

Paisal O. Abutazil, DILG 9 Regional Director said in an interview,

“Sabi ni Secretary Sueno that it should be 100%. It’s mandatory for the barangays to conduct barangay assembly and hopefully, makikinig yung mga barangay officials because we will be monitoring. Yung sa mga hindi nag conduct, they will have to explain as this is mandated by the LGU code.”

He also stressed that barangays will be made to explain in the event they will not comply with the directive and if their reasons are not acceptable, corresponding sanctions will be imposed which may include dismissal from service and suspension.   (R.G. A A. Go)
