Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar dodged questions on her stand on the contentious death penalty issue but said that she will abide once the measure passes into law.

“Once the Death Penalty law is implemented, we must abide by what is in the law.  Whatever will be the outcome we will have to abide by that,” said Climaco.

In her weekly press briefing at City Hall yesterday, Climaco said that she is no longer a Legislative Representative who needs to take sides in an issue but a Local Chief Executive.

House Bill 4737, the bill which imposes Death Penalty on certain heinous crimes in the country, was passed last week by members of the House of Representatives.

It currently awaits the Senate version before it can be signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte.

It will be recalled that the two Zamboanga Representatives, Celso Lobregat and Mannix Dalipe, voted in favor of the imposition of the death penalty.

Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde has voiced his opposition while the members of the City Council remain divided on the issue.  (Bhong Simbajon)
