A Doctor to the Barrio (DTTB) is asking for an organized system to protect doctors and public health officers assigned to far flung areas under the DTTB program.

This after Dr Dreyfuss Perlas, a participant of the DTTB program, was gunned down by still unidentified gunmen in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte last March 1.

Dr. Maryrose S. Bugtai, a DTTB participant assigned to Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte, said that security of participants in the program merely depends on the integrity of the people they work with.

“More often than not, deployed doctors are not natives of their areas of assignment and our administrative roles allow us to face challenges that are beyond the medical practice,” Bugtai said.

The Department of Health -9 (DOH-9) already admitted a lack of an organized system to protect participants under the DTTB program.

Dr. Aristedes Tan, DOH-9 Regional Director, is encouraging DTTBs to ask help from the elected officials in their assigned localities.

“When I learned about the murder of a brother in the field of public health, more than fear and worry about my own personal safety, there is the feeling of profound grief, anger and hurt, not only for the bereaved family but for the arm of rural health workers,” Bugtai said.

The general objective of the DTTB program is to provide the country with competent medical human resource who will render quality medical care to patients.

There are eight DTTB deployed in Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.  (RGAAGo)
