The city government is fast tracking its efforts to purchase a lot for the construction of a new jail facility following reports that the present faciity can no longer accommodate additional prisoners.

The City Planning Office is reportedly “cracking its head” to enter into negotiations and purchase the lot for the project.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar  instructed City Planning Officer Engr. Rodrigo Sicat to meet with Bureau of Jail Management and Penology officials to urge them to include the project in their supplemental budget for the year 2019.

This will enable jail authorities to include funds for site development, a necessary component for the construction of the new facility.

Since the 2018 budget of BJMP was already deliberated, the agency should include an additional amount in its 2019 budget for site development in addition to what the city government will appropriate for the lot purchase, explained Climaco.

The standby funds of P194-million of the BJMP is intended only for the construction of the facility and excludes site development work such as land preparation and perimeter fencing.

“It is very important to have the site development because BJMP cannot use and occupy their new building in the new location unless they will construct the perimeter fence which is very vital for security and safety of the public,” Climaco said.

Climaco said that the lot purchase will require at least three hectares of raw and rolling land area.

“Planning Office should finish the negotiations before the end of this month.  That is my instruction to Engineer Sicat,” said Climaco. (Bhong Simbajon/ RMN)
