Zamboanga city is prone to landslides and flooding incidents, based on a geo-hazard map prepared by the Mines and Geosciences Board (MGB.)

Mines and Geosciences Bureau Chief Geologist Jessica Lucero said that 77 out of 98 barangays are prone to landslide incidents.

Around 50% of areas in Zamboanga city are also prone to flooding.

Areas prone to landslides include places along steep slopes specially those characterized by oversaturated soil with weathered rocks and stones.

“The oversaturated (ground) cannot bear the load, el tendency tan slide,” said Lucero.

Flood prone areas are the places located near the coasts and low- lying areas.

Lucero said that their office is responsible for doing assessment and recommending mitigation measures to prevent negative effects brought about by the hazards.  (Liza Jocson)
