Former govt writer killed in highway accident PDF Print E-mail

A retired writer for the Philippine government was killed after being bumped by a speeding motorcycle along Maria Clara Lobregat Highway in Mercedes last Saturday.

The victim was identified as Rene Bowon y Ibrahim Sr., 73 years old, a widower and a resident of Zone 1, Mercedes.

Bowon is a former writer- reporter of the defunct Department of Public Information, the mother unit of the Philippine Information agency, Bureau of National and Foreign Information.

A police report disclosed that Bowon was about to cross the highway when a motorcycle travelling on high speed driven by Vicente Ferrer y Rojas, a construction worker, bumped him.

Both driver and victim were rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries on different parts of the body.

Bowon however died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Ferrer was taken to the Culianan Police Station and was placed under police custody pending the filing of charges in court.

Ferrer said that he came from a construction site at a subdivision in Mercedes and was on his way home when the accident took place.

Veteran journalist Felino Santos said in a facebook comment that he was with Bowon during the martial law years when the latter was working as a reporter-writer of the Department of Public Information.

Santos described Bowon as a “smiling type” of person.  (Dan Toribio)
