A Basilan-based women’s organization aired its protest on a television report claiming that female genital mutilation still exists in Basilan province.

Rahman Jamiri, a Women’s representative from Basilan, said that the traditional circumcision of Muslim women practiced in some parts of Basilan should not be misinterpreted to be genital mutilation.

The traditional circumcision practiced on females from 7 to 12 years old involves dabbing traditional oil to a woman’s private part and not mutilating such.

“Hindi masasaktan o masusugatan ang pribadong bahagi ng babae,” Jamiri explained.

Jamiri is reacting to a noontime television news report saying that mutilation continues to exist in the province.

The women’s representatives asked journalists to be factual and not to exaggerate their reports to command viewership.  (Ely Dumaboc)
