The Western Mindanao Command is planning to send troops to Sibago Island to thwart piracy attacks and other criminal activities in the area.

Western Mindanao Command Chief Maj General Carlito Galvez said that he has already directed the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NAVFORWEM) to have a strong presence in the area.

“We might have a redeployment of forces to be forwarded to the island,” said Galvez during a press conference held after the rescue of a kidnap victim last Saturday.

He also said that he intends to order Marine personnel stationed in the Cabatangan area to be deployed to Sibago.

There will be an adjustment of deployment both on ground and at sea, said Galvez.

Galvez gave the directive in response to increasing incidents of piracy within the vicinity of Sibago island.

In November 2016, pirates hijacked the MV Royal 16, a Vietnamese vessel, and took six crew members.

Last January,  armed men harassed and attempted to hijack the MV Ocean Kingdom,  a vessel departing from Zamboanga city to Davao.

Last Thursday, pirates attacked a tugboat and abducted captain Aurelio Agacac and Chief Engineer Laurencio Tiro.

Agacac was rescued by authorities while military operations are continuing to rescue Tiro. (Liza Jocson)
