Contrary to speculation, the presence of rogue cops from Manila has lowered the crime rate of Basilan province.

This was revealed by Basilan Police Provincial Office Director Sr Supt Nickson Muksan who recently engaged the policemen to a boodle fight in a Malamawi beach.

Muksan assigned the rogue cops to do foot patrol and random checkpoints.

He said that the presence of the police officers on the streets have contributed to police visibility which lowered the crime rate of the province.

Muksan said that aside from their main job of providing security, the police officers were also able to help when the province experienced heavy flooding.

The police themselves were able to change their impression of Basilan once they were toured around the province.

“Maganda po dito.  Iba po yung naririnig namin sa Manila.  Very relaxed po dito unlike sa Manila talagang pressured kami doon day and night,” said Police Inspector Maryann Saykalabie.

Saykalabie,  a widow whose husband was gunned down in Lanao del Sur, brought her children with her when she was assigned to Basilan.  (Allen Abastillas)
