At least three persons were killed while 24 others were wounded during an explosion at a crowded area in barangay Busbus, Sulu Saturday night.

Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Col Cirilito Sobejana said that the explosion occurred within the vicinity of Karina’s Bakeshop in Sitio Lambayung, Busbus Sulu at around 7:10 Saturday evening.

Unofficial reports said that a suspect was immediately arrested after the explosion.

Prior to the blast, a man was seen lobbing a hand grenade to a group of people within the vicinity of the bakeshop and a nearby barber shop.

The area at that particular time was filled with people who congregate after the evening prayer.

Police are continuing their investigation on the incident.

The explosion occurred during intensified military operations in Basilan province aimed towards rescuing a Chief Engineer abducted from a tug boat last Thursday during a piracy attack.

Combined military, police and civilian units continue to scour the area to prevent bandits from slipping the victim out to Sulu province, the area where kidnap victims normally end up being kept.  (Liza Jocson)
