It was one of the best birthday gifts ever.

After four days of captivity, Joint Task Group Basilan troops were able to rescue a tugboat Chief Engineer along the shoreline of a Basilan municipality yesterday.

The rescue coincided with the birthday of his wife who has been praying for the release of the Chief Engineer since being abducted by the Abu Sayyaf last Thursday.

Engineer Laurencio Tiro was recovered by troops under the 4th Special Forces Battalion and the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team along the shoreline of Sitio Sasa, Barangay Basakan, Hadji Mohammad Adjul Basilan at 10:30 Monday night.

Western Mindanao Command Chief Maj General Carlito Galvez attributed the recovery to relentless pursuit operations of combined miitary, police and civilian units which made the Abu Sayyaf decide to free Tiro.

Tiro’s rescue came two days after the recovery of another kidnap victim, Boat Captain Aurelio Agacac.

Tiro and Agacac are the Chief Engineer and Boat Captain of the Super Shuttle T/B 1 under the Asian Marine Transport.

The tugboat was sailing off Sibago Island in Basilan when it was hijacked by the Abu Sayyaf last Thursday.

“ The recent case of rescue and recovery of Mr Agacac and Mr Tiro from the clutches of the terrorist ASG is the success of a military-political-social approach in thwarting violent extremism and criminality from establishing foot holds in our communities,” said Western Mindanao Command Chief Maj General Carlito Galvez, in a statement.  (Liza Jocson)
