Five persons, including a hitch hiker, were killed while ten others were injured with a truck they were riding on crashed along the highway of barangay Katipunan, RT Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga Sibugay last Wednesday.

Police Regional Office-9 Information Officer Supt Rogelio Alabata disclosed that the incident took place at around 2pm when the Cortez family was on their way to their residence in Divisoria, Zamboanga after leaving their farm.

Mrs. Enriquita Casipong Cortez told DZT that she and her relatives, including her ten year old daughter, were riding on the 6-wheeler truck  driven by her husband Ricardo when the truck experienced engine trouble and the brakes malfunctioned.

Ricardo tried to control the steering wheel but failed to do so until the truck crashed onto a concrete post and fell on its side.

Ricardo and Paterno Endrina, a 60-year old hitchhiker, died on the spot.

Three other fatalities, including Romelyn, Enriquita’s 10-year old daughter, were brought to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

The other fatalities were identified as Wengilyn Casipong, (Enriquita’s sister) 46; and Reynante Beniares, 34.

Wounded victims were identified as Enriquita Cortez, Roger Cortez, Anthony Cortez, 11;  Rey Casipong, 34;  Lawrence Casipong, 51; Jaime Montecalbo,18;  Jayson Suringa, 16; Jomaril Anduha ,17; Jordan Banga, 18; and Fiona Casipong,7.

The bodies of Ricardo,  Wengilyn and Romelyn were brought to a funeral parlor in the city while the bodies of Endrina and Beniares were taken to a funeral home in Sibugay.  (Dan Toribio)
