The Highway Patrol Group-9 recovered a Montero Sports vehicle in Zamboanga city which was reportedly carnapped via the “Rent Tangay” scam during operations held over the weekend.

HPG-9 Senior Inspector Mervin S. Claret said that he spotted the sports utility vehicle, a Sedona Red Montero with conduction sticker 1572, during anti- carnapping operations along Nuñez street extension.

He flagged down the Montero after noticing that there was no plate number attached to the unit.

When Claret asked the driver, identified as Tango Abdulla, for registration documents, the latter failed to provide such to the police.

Abdulla instead told Claret that he bought the vehicle in Marawi city.

Claret then checked the unit with the HPG Motor Vehicle Information System and learned that it is included among the “Rent Tangay Sangla Scam” vehicles.

The Montero was reportedly owned by a certain B.S. Salavante, a resident of Manila, who reported the vehicle as stolen.

After it was reported, HPG personnel were able to locate the vehicle in Zamboanga city through the Global Positioning System attached to the unit.

HPG-9 Supt Joshua F. Alejandro directed Claret to impound the unit and coordinate with the Crime Laboratory-9 to conduct a macro etching examination. (Allen Abastillas)
