The City Council has approved the use of the former cemetery site in barangay Talisayan for other public purposes.

“We amended the ordinance and declared the property now for other purposes,” said Councilor Cesar Jimenez.

Jimenez is referring to Ordinance 282, entitled as an Ordinance Establishing Public Cemeteries in the city of Zamboanga and providing for the operation, administration, maintenance, and appropriating funds therefore.

The ordinance was amended by Ordinance 2017-15 which would in effect, change the use of the property as included in the ordinance for other purposes.

Ordinance 2017-15, authored by Councilors Lilibeth Nuño, Josephine Pareja, Al-Jihan Edding and Cesar Jimenez, was approved on first, second and third reading during the regular session yesterday.

The ordinance was certified as urgent by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar who intends the former cemetery site to be used for the construction of a jail facility.

The ordinance would now free up the property and make it available as a possible site to house the new Zamboanga City Reformatory Center. (RGAAGo)
