Around 50 elementary school students in Lamitan City in Basilan province graduated in floodwaters after a heavy downpour in the city last Tuesday.

Balas Elementary School Principal Maria Nava said that the multipurpose hall, the place designated as the graduation venue, was flooded after heavy rains poured into the city just before graduation ceremonies were to take place.

School officials decided to ask the students to take off their school shoes and wade in ankle deep waters so they can continue on with the scheduled ceremony.

The school is reportedly located in a low lying area which is quickly flooded during heavy rains.

Parents however are blaming school officials for the fiasco since the rains have reportedly been pouring in the city for several days prior to graduation ceremonies.

They said that school officials should have looked for another venue on where to stage the graduation ceremonies.  (Richard Falcatan)
