Motorcycle riding gunmen brazenly shot a utility van conductor before horrified passengers inside a public utility van at the Tetuan Highway before noon yesterday.

The fatality was identified as Merwin Guevarra Gonzales, 29, separated, a barangay tanod of Curuan who is also moonlighting as a utility van conductor.

Robert Alvarez, the UV driver, said that the incident happened while he and Gonzales were travelling with 18 passengers towards the city proper.

When the van stopped along Tetuan Highway, Alvarez said that he heard gunshots coming from the right portion of the vehicle.

Soon after, he saw Gonzales falling towards the left portion with a bullet wound on the head.

Panic-stricken passengers scrambled out of the van after the attack.

Two passengers who were seated beside the victim collapsed out of fear and were taken to the hospital.

Police recovered a spent shell of a .45 caliber pistol near the crime scene.

Witnesses meanwhile said that the gunmen, who were riding in tandem on board a motorcycle, escaped towards east after the incident.

Relatives of the victim are reportedly puzzled over what could be the possible motive of the crime.  (Dan Toribio)
