The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the city government of Zamboanga only have until June this year to provide a property to house the new jail facility or risk having funds realigned to some other purpose, according to a jail official.

This after reports surfaced that officials are not really keen on accepting the offer of a property in barangay Talisayan for the construction of a new jail facility.

In an interview with E-media, BJMP Operations Officer, Jail Inspector Florito Anios however said that there are four other properties offered by the city government last year as possible sites for the new reformatory centre.

Two of these properties are located in barangays Culianan and Cabaluay in the east coast.

The properties however have yet to be procured from private entities, a process that will still take time.

Anios said that jail officials are partial to having the jail constructed in barangay Culianan because it complies with most of the criteria given by jail officials for a new jail site.

This includes close proximity to the Courts which provides minimized risk in transporting inmates.   (Liza Jocson)
