Three militiamen were killed while eleven others were injured during an encounter which happened in Sumisip Basilan this morning.

Western Mindanao Command Spokesperson Capt Joann Petinglay said that a heavy firefight occurred between personnel of the 4th Special Forces Battalion who are manning a detachment in barangay Cabcaban Sumisip.

The troops encountered the Abu Sayyaf bandits during a security patrol at around 7:15 Monday morning within the vicinity.

Thirty minutes into the encounter, the  troops were reinforced by personnel from the 1st Special Forces who were fired at by the escaping bandits.

Three members of the Civilian Active Auxiliary were killed while five others were injured.

Six other soldiers under Joint Task Force Basilan were also injured in the encounter.

Pursuit operations are currently ongoing.

Eight of the injured personnel were brought to Zamboanga city while three were hospitalized in Basilan.

Western Mindanao Command Chief Lt Gen Carlito Galvez said that the encounter happened after a detachment was set up in Barangay Cabcaban in response to the calls by the Basilan provincial government to secure the area.

The troops were conducting security patrols when they encountered the Abu Sayyaf members.  (Liza Jocson)
