Up to 8 people have been killed while 11 were wounded in an encounter between government troops and the Abu Sayyaf last Monday in Sumisip Basilan.

Western Mindanao Command Spokesperson Capt Jo-ann Petinglay said that seven members of the CAFGU and 1 BPAT member have been killed while conducting security patrol within 5 kilometers of a detachment area in Barangay Cabcaban Sumisip Basilan last Monday.

Eleven soldiers and militiamen have been injured.  Among the injured are two officers, four enlisted personnel and five members of the CAFGU.

Petinglay said that the encounter is an indication of the presence of the Abu Sayyaf in the area, the reason why Sumisip officials requested the military to open a detachment in the barangay.

According to Petinglay, the Westmincom has decided not to remove the detachment and instead reinforce it with more troops to fight the Abu Sayyaf in the area. (Liza Jocson)
