The body of an intoxicated man was recovered by police in waters off Labuan after being washed up in the area yesterday morning.

Labuan Police Station Commander Chief Inspector Raymond Sanson identified the victim as Ronel Galong y Kagang, of legal age and a resident of Agrarian Patalon.

Galong’s body was retrieved by authorities after it was discovered floating at around 6:20am yesterday.

Investigation showed that Galong was having a drinking session together with friends along the shore of Patalon last Sunday.

After consuming several bottles of intoxicating drinks, Galong took a banca and paddled towards the deep sea.

Minutes after, witnesses saw the paddle used by the victim fall into the water.

Galong was seen jumping into the water to retrieve the paddle but was overtaken by strong waves until he disappeared from view.

Search and rescue operations were immediately launched but yielded negative results.  (Dan Toribio)
