The Department of Social Welfare and Development-9 (DSWD-9) has launched the Bio Intensive Gardening (BIG) project at Barangay Quiniput last Friday.

BIG is one of the initiative of department to encourage Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s) beneficiaries to plant and produce vegetable gardens within their community or in areas near their residences, the purpose of which  is to promote health and nutrition among the beneficiaries.

This is also in partnership with the City Agriculturist Office, that   trained the beneficiaries on how to grow these plants, fruits, and vegetables.

Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD 9 Information Officer said in an interview that this will not only serve as one of the Pantawid  projects in the community but will also serve as part of their daily living. The beneficiaries can use their produce for daily consumption or sell such for income generating purposes.

“This will also serve as an inspiration for other community members who are non Pantawid members to emulate el diila practice so they can see that these beneficiaries are not just receiving the grants based on conditionalities but there are other things that they can do in the communities,” Salvador said.

In Ayala district, where the project was launched last March, beneficiaries were able to produce vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

He added that in time, there will be monitoring team to do the selection of best garden in the city, province, municipality, and region.

“Hinde este tan happen na uno area lang it happens in region 9. We challenge them to beautify their areas,” Salvador said.  (RGAAGo)
