The Scholarship in Teacher Education Program to Upgrade (STEPUP) teacher quality in the Phiippines is offering its scholarship to students in the city.

STEPUP is a scholarship campaign implemented by the Philippine Business for Education (PBed) and funded by the Australian Government through its Basic Education Sector Transformation Program together with the Department of Education (DepEd).

The program is open to graduates, young professionals not older than 45 years old, and a graduate of any bachelor’s degree, except BS Education.

For those interested, requirements include the following: A duly accomplished application form downloaded at www.stepupph.org, transcript of records, certificate of general average, two recommendation forms signed by teachers or employees.

The deadline for submission of requirements is on May 10, 2017 .

For those who passed the document screening, they will have to pass the Philippine Aptitude Test for Teachers (PATT), which serves as STEP UP’s qualifying exam and the partner TEI’s entrance exam, interview, and the demo teaching.

Anna Sarte, Philippine Business for Education Program Officer said in an interview that, for the entire Philippines, they are looking for a total of 400 scholars.

Successful applicants may choose to enroll at Ateneo de Naga University, Cebu Normal University, Mariano Marcos State University, Philippine Normal University, University of Santo Tomas, University of South Eastern Philippines, West Visayas State University, Xavier University, and Ateneo de Zamboanga University for Zamboanga City.

Chosen scholars must maintain an 85 percent general average, must not drop subjects, finish the 18 education units in one year, must take and pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), and must teach in a public school for at least three years.

Benefits of scholars includes the following: graduation and miscellaneous fees, one time relocation allowance, semestral uniform allowance, practice teaching allowance, one time return allowance, semestral book allowance, basic health assistance, professional mentoring, and LET review assistance.

“Sa mga graduates and young professionals matagal ng walang work at sa tingin mo you have the excellence to be a teacher we will sponsor 18 education units for you to become a licensed teacher. Sabay natin iimprove yung imahe ng pagtuturo sa Pilipinas and the best should teach,” Sarte said

These scholars will be prioritized by the DepEd in their hiring of teachers as the scholars are required to teach in public school for at least three years. (RGAAGo)
