Lamitan Mayor Rose Furigay is calling on officials of the Philippne Coconut Authority (PCA) to provide coconut seedlings to Lamitan farmers whose trees were devastated by coconut scale insects, commonly called Cocolisap.

“Our farmers did not receive any assistance from the Philippine Coconut Authority to help the farmers by way of coconut seedlings since day one of the outbreak,” Furigay said.

The seedlings will be used by farmers to plant new coconut trees to replace the ones destroyed during the outbreak.

Furigay said that the farmers can either replace the affected plants with new coconut trees or plant other varieties such as mahogany or rubber by way of inter-cropping.

Furigay also called on the city’s barangay captains to advise farmers on what they can do to the plants destroyed by Cocolisap.

She underscored the importance of planting trees to replace the fallen crops to protect the city from calamities such as flooding during the typhoon season.  (Allen Abastillas)
