A Barangay Captain who earlier tested positive for the use of illegal drugs was shot dead by one of two unidentified gunmen in front of the barangay hall last Friday night.

Police identified the victim as Eduardo Binosa Caloyloy, 52 years old, married, and the Barangay Chairman of Licomo.

Initial investigation showed that the incident happened after the victim participated in a drinking session at a store located in front of the Licomo Barangay hall.

At around 7:30pm, a motorcycle stopped in front of the Aldren Store and one of two suspects riding tandem on a motorcycle fired repeatedly at the barangay captain who was then standing just outside the door of the establishment.

The suspects then fled towards an unknown direction.

The victim sustained five gunshot wounds on different parts of the body and was rushed to a local clinic but was declared dead on arrival.

Police found seven spent shells of a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Yesterday morning, police arrested a certain Jonal Maninggo, 25 years old and a resident of Tictapul after witnesses identified him as the gunman.

Maninggo denied the accusation.

Caloyloy was linked to a series of controversies starting when he tested  positve for the use of illegal drugs during a drug test ordered by Liga ng mga Barangay Captain President Jerry Perez last year.

He was then placed under preventive suspension after the incident.

Early this year, he was arrested by police after the latter found a hand grenade attached to his motorcycle.

Caloyloy claimed that the grenade was planted.

Caloyloy’s wife told newsmen  that her husband started receiving death threats after the case was dismissed by prosecutors.(Dan Toribio)
