Workers groups in Region 9 are asking President Rodrigo Duterte for three wishes during the observance of Labor Day today, May 1.

Labor Representative Jose Suan said that workers are hoping for the end of contractualization and to certify as urgent a House bill providing penalties for companies who refuse to follow a related anti-contractualization law.

Suan said fishing company workers are also hoping for a review of the current Fisheries Code.

There are no reported strikes of fishing companies in Zamboanga city and in other areas in the region.

Suan however said that the working sector is still hoping for certain amendments to the Fisheries Code.

In the year 2015, fishing company workers held a one-day fishing holiday to protest proposed amendments that could potentially endanger the livelihood of fishing industry workers in the region.

Foremost on the list are huge penalties for fishing violations and provisions granting enormous powers to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR.)
