Mayor Beng Climaco Monday hailed the labor sector for its contributions to the development and progress of Zamboanga City, as she reaffirmed her administration’s continuous support to laborers’ cause.

The chief executive recognized the efforts of the labor sector as she joined the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and other agencies concerned in spearheading the Labor Day activities Monday at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) gymnasium.

The activities included job and business fairs as a show of recognition and acknowledgement of the contributions of the labor sector in the city and the region. Two fairs, one held at the WMSU gym from 9am-5pm and at the KCC Mall from 1pm to 9pm drew thousands of job seekers to the two venues. Other events included the Diskwento Fair, TESDA Skills demos and the distribution of livelihood starter kits to selected laborers.

Mayor Climaco said the City Government is one with the DOLE in its advocacies on job generation through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) under the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).

She thanked the DOLE for initiating the Labor Day activities and expressed gratitude likewise to the participating recruitment agencies.

She also made the rounds of the different booths set up by the recruitment agencies to cheer up and encourage the job applicants.

Unlike in other areas where the Labor Day celebration is marred by protest rallies and marches, the Zamboanga City celebration has always been peaceful and well-attended. (Sheila Covarrubias)
