A massive power outage which affected several areas in Western Mindanao was caused by maliciously planted trees in Iligan City which tripped off major power lines.

Beth Ladaga, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines Spokesperson said that maliciously planted trees touched the conductors located in Sitio Cacar Ditucalan in iligan city.

The incident caused the trip off of the Baloi-Aurora 138 KV line and the Agus 5-Aurora 138 KV line at 8:34am Thursday.

Both lines were restored after one hour but the Baloi-Aurora line tripped off again at around 12:50, causing a power outage in affected areas.

The incident caused a region-wide blackout which affected electric cooperatives in Misamis Occidental, Lanao and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Agus 5-Aurora 138 KV line and the Baloi-Aurora 138KV lines were energized that same afternoon, thereby restoring electricity to power consumers in the region.

Wayward trees and uncooperative landowners have been reported by NGCP as perennial problems which are the main causes of power outages in the region.  (LAJ)
