The much-awaited weight lifting gym of Zamboangueña Olympian Hidilyn Diaz broke ground last Monday, signalling the possible entry of future weightliftiing winners from Zamboanga city.

Weightlifting Coast Jayfrus Diaz together with weight lifting athletes presided over the ground breaking ceremonies.

The gym was planned to be a one-storey edifice with complete weightlifting facilities.  It may be used by the public in the morning but it will be reserved for weightlifting athletes in the afternoon.

Architect Errold Intong designed the building which is expected to be finished by August this year.

Diaz vowed to come back to Zamboanga this August to attend the launch of the new weightlifting gym, a project which she envisioned since 2015.

Diaz has reportedly spent P5-million for the construction of the gym including the purchase of the lot.

Diaz said that she wanted the gym to help budding weightlifters realize their dream to become future weightlifting champions.

“Hirap na hirap ang mga bata sa training.  Ayokong mahirapan sila sa training.  Naniniwala ako sa kanila at alam kong malayo pa ang mararating nila at marealize nila yong dream nila sa weightlifting,” said Diaz.

Diaz organized the Mampang Weightlifting Club and put up a mini-gym located just beside her house in barangay Mampang.

She coaches the children and other aspiring athletes when she is in Zamboanga.

The Olympic Silver medalist is currently training in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  (RGAAGo)
