An icebox containing an improvised explosive device (IED) was found abandoned outside the house of a Lamitan City Councilor last Wednesday night.

The explosive was reportedly placed inside the box which was left outside the residence of Lamitan Councilor Arleigh Eisma.

Family members rushed outside to find the icebox after an explosion that occurred last Wednesday at around 8pm.

Lamitan Police Chief Allan Benasing attributed the incident to the Abu Sayyaf Group whose members reportedly sent extortion letters to the Councilor’s family.

Last March, the Lamitan City Council passed a resolution asking the police to protect the  Eisma family after the latter reported receiving extortion letters and death threats.

Information was not immediately available on how authorities responded to the Council resolution.

The Eisma family has been reported to be the subject of a series of threats and other security-related incidents in the past which victimized family members. (Richard Falcatan)
