Schools in Zamboanga City joined in the Brigada Eskwela campaign which kicked off Monday, May 15, to drum up support and prepare school facilities for school year 2017-2018.

DepEd Division of City Schools Education Program Supervisor of Basilio Uy said the annual campaign will not only focus on preparing classrooms and facilities for the opening of classes this June but will also incorporate disaster risk reduction initiatives to ensure safety and preparedness of schoolchildren and teaching personnel.

Per DepEd Memorandum 43, these DRR measures include identifying and preparing of evacuation areas and temporary shelters during disasters and emergencies, posting of emergency contact numbers in various areas of the school, establishing early warning mechanisms, and equipping schools with first aid kits, flashlights, and other necessary supplies for emergencies.

Uy said Zamboanga City schools will simultaneously conduct the week-long Brigada Eskwela from May 15-20, under the theme “Isang DepEd, isang pamayanan, isang bayanihan para sa handa at ligtas na paaralan”.

Meanwhile, DepEd once again firmly emphasized its “no collection” policy in line with the enrollments for the forthcoming school year 2017-2018.

Authorized contributions such as those for the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) and the school paper should be voluntary, and should not be a prerequisite for enrollment.

“We have authorized collection, but voluntary basis hinde ese compulsory...still the word is voluntary contribution,” Uy said.

According to DepEd, classes in public elementary, junior and senior high schools will open on June 5. (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
