President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Martial Law to respond to a destructive rebellion and persistent terrorism in MIndanao.

Zamboanga city and the rest of Mindanao was placed on heightened alert as members of the Maute group wrought havoc in Marawi city starting Tuesday afternoon.

The declaration was announced at the height of a rebellion staged by Maute members in Marawi city, Lanao del Sur’s capital.

The declaration was made by the President while on a state visit to Russia, which he cut short after receiving reports of violence and destruction in Marawi city.

“I will be harsh,” was Duterte’s warning aired over national television.

The President however advised residents not to be too scared as the declaration is focused on continuing terrorist activities in Mindanao.

In Zamboanga city,  Zamboanga city Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar convened the Security sector Tuesday afternoon and directed them to strengthen Zamboanga city’s internal security.

Zamboanga city was placed on heightened alert following the attacks in Marawi city.

The alert status was enforced to avoid any spillover of violence in Marawi city.

Climaco- Salazar also asked Zamboanga residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or persons in their respective areas.

The Mayor ordered the Police to closely coordinate with the Department of Justice to arrest suspicious individuals. (Liza Jocson)
