A furious gunbattle erupted between government troops and lawless elements in Zamboanga del Norte after about 30 bandits opened fire at a military camp in Sirawai.

Airstrikes pummeled the area as hundreds of residents from at least four barangays ran for safer ground.

A Police Regional Office-9 report said that the conflict started last Tuesday when around 30 lawless elements positioned themselves at the back portion of the 42nd Infantry Battalion camp at Doña Cecilia, Sirawai and opened fire.

The group then escaped towards barangay Panabutan.

PNP personnel from the Sirawai Municipal Police Station secured the Municipal Hall building to prevent a take over by the rebels.

At around 1:30pm on that day, air strikes began to pummel the area to flush out the bandits who reportedly stationed themselves on high ground.

Mayor Gamar Janihim, Sirawai Mayor, said that government operations are still in effect amid the encounter.

Meanwhile, residents from the barangays of Doña Cecilia Panabutan, Sipakit and San Vicente have escaped the fierce gun battle.  (Liza Jocson)
