A Zamboanga business leader expressed optimism that Martial Law can be good for progress and development in Mindanao.

Pedro Rufo Soliven, Regional Development Council Chairman, said that Martial Law is expected to boost the region’s economy because of investments it can bring in.

“That is what investors want- peace and security; law and order,” Soliven said in an interview.

Soliven dispelled speculations of possible abuse saying citing the safeguards included in the 1987 Constitution.

This is a different Martial Law and not the 1973 Martial Law under Former President Ferdinand Marcos, said Soliven.

He also said that this was imposed for sixty days and can even be lifted depending on the situation.

“I think what President Duterte needs is that extra emergency power to put everything in place,”  Soliven said.
