Transportation officials held a meeting last Monday on the implementation of the new law on child safety aboard motorcycles.

Land Transportation Office-9 Regional Director Atty Aminola Abaton said that he has conferred with Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Director Eduardo Montealto about the implementation of Republic Act 10666, the Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act of 2015, anytime soon.

“Kailangan kasi ang safety ng mga bata pag nakasakay sila sa mga single na motorcycles.  At maiwasan ang aksidente sa kanila na maaari sila ma-disable o ikamatay pa ng mga ito,”  Abaton explained.

Under the new law, a child is allowed to ride a motorcycle if three conditions are met.

First is the feet of children on board motorcycles should be able to reach the foot rest.

They shoud be able to wear the standard prescribed helmet and must be able to grasp the waist of the driver.  (Allen Abastillas)
