The Department of Energy(DoE) will launch this month the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Mindanao, officials said Wednesday.

DOE Undersecretary Benito Ranque, who was in Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday, said WESM seeks “to deliver quality, reliable, secure and affordable electricity” in the island.

The WESM is like a “dating place” for energy players where electricity will be traded.

The WESM mechanism would also bring more flexibility, progress, and most importantly, enhance the power of choice of the consumers, the DOE official said.

Energy Undersecretary Felix William “Wimpy” Fuentebella, who was with Ranque, also disclosed that since January this year, the DOE has already set its objective to level up electricity in Mindanao.

“After conducting consultations among stakeholders and partners in Mindanao’s energy industry, the DOE is now ready to launch and pursue WESM’s trial operation in the island in June this year,” Fuentebella said.

“The real commercial operations, however, would depend on the readiness of the industry players in Mindanao,” Fuentebella said.  (Ercel Maandig/PNA)
