The members of the House of Representatives led by Speaker Pantaleon D. Alvarez and other House leaders travelled to Northern Luzon from June 1 to 6, 2017, to inspect roads, highways, vital infrastructures, and installations.

In an interview with RMN Zamboanga, House of Representatives Committee on Public Works and Highways chairman, Conressman Celso Lobregat said that this move was a result of the success of the first expedition.

The new trip will pass by the great plains of Pampanga, Tarlac and Bataan, the rolling hills of Zambales, the scenic Ilocos Region, and the mountainous province of Ifugao and Baguio City.

More than eighty congressmen signified their intention to join the travel according to Lobregat, since the congress went on break last Wednesday (May 31,2017)

The Northern Luzon highways inspection expedition was inspired by the success of the “First House of Representatives Western and Eastern Nautical Highway Expedition” held from March 17 to 27, 2017, where House members checked the status of roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ports and facilities, roads and highways, and infrastructures from Batangas Port in Luzon to Davao City here in Mindanao.

House leaders are expected to identify areas in Northern Luzon where vital infrastructures and road signs are most needed. They will also inspect the connectivity of road networks and the feasibility of using existing government installations for better public service.

Congressman Lobregat said that the expedition will also inspect heritage sites and environmental wonders, among others, which need more protection.

Among the agencies that will form part of the caravan are the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Transportation (DOTr), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

The house contingent is being led by Speaker Bebot Alvarez, Majority Floor Leader Rudy Fariñas, Chairman of Committee on Accounts Rep. Elinita Ermita-Buhain, Committee on Appropriations Chairman Rep. Carlo Alexei Nograles, Committee on Transportation Chairman Rep. Cesar Sarmiento, Committee on Public Works and Highways Chairman Rep. Celso Lobregat, Committee on Justice Chairman Rep. Reynaldo Umali, and Committee on Good Government Chairman Rep. Johhny Pimentel.

Congressman Lobregat said that the House leaders decided to start the caravan immediately so their time and effort will be maximized in checking on the needs of the people of Northern Luzon. He said that a safe, fast and convenient road network is imperative. – Dexter Yap/PR
