The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has revealed that the municipality of Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay Province is now becoming the nerve center of commodity supplies in Western Mindanao.

This is dueto apprehensions of merchants in the Mindanao region ofa possible economic lockdown in Mindanao in case the present conflict situation in the Islamic City of Marawi worsens.

In an interview with RMN Zamboanga, DTI Provincial Director Ceferino Rubio said, the commodity suppliers in Western Mindanao has learned their lessons during the time of President Joseph Estrada, wherein the conflict in Central Mindanao paralyzed shipment of goods from Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro to the Western Mindanao region, and in 2013 when Zamboanga City was under siege and the highways were blocked towards Zamboanga City hampering shipment of goods as well.

Rubio said the commodity suppliers already prepared their contingency plans in the event of more widespread rebellion or terrorism in the Mindanao region,so as not to hamper the shipping of their goods to the different destinations.

“It is the attitude of every travelling merchant supplying commodities to Zamboanga City and other parts of the region to ship their goods towards its destination with any means and strategies they can. They are experts in this matter,” Rubio stressed.

Rubio explained that the town of Ipil is strategically located for the effective dispatch of goods towards the different parts of the region. He said that most of the suppliers of commodities in Western Mindanao already have their huge storage facilities in Ipil and it would be easy for them to replenish their products in the different areas in the region.

He also assured that in the event a total lockdown will cripple the mode of transport from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Lanao provinces towards the Western Mindanao region, Zamboanga City will not suffer shortage of commodities because the situation is already anticipated by all the product suppliers in the area.

Rubio urged the public not to resort in panic buying and for the department stores not to  hoardproducts because there are more than enough supplies of all types of commodities in the Western Mindanao region. (BhongSimbajon/RMN News)
