“The conduct of simulation exercises in the city proper and city hall is mind-conditioning for the people, and not to panic,” thus said Zamboanga City Mayor BengClimaco-Salazar when asked by newsmen in her weekly press conference about the conduct of a bomb explosion simulation exercise last Sunday afternoon at the vicinity of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Residents who were not aware that there was an ongoing simulation exercise went into panic and other scampered to different directions when they saw police cars rushing, policemen running, followed by an explosion nearby. Comments were also flooding in social media about the explosion which they heard in the vicinity.

Mayor Climaco said that the “SIMEX” in the central district of the city was not intended to alarm the public but to keep them alert and vigilant.

“Terror can happen anytime, I call on the residents to be pro-active and vigilant to support security efforts of the military and the local police,” Climaco said.

The local chief executive further explained that the situation in Zamboanga city is volatile, and people will always be exposed to the realities right now, therefore their minds must be conditioned, she said.

With the attack in Resorts World in Manila and the terror attack in London, Climaco called on city government employees and other offices to ensure their pre-emptive response to emergency situation.

As this developed, Climaco spearheaded another security briefing this morning to check on the existing security efforts being adopted by the local police and the military. BhongSimbajon/RMN News
